A Global Issue - non-communicable diseases
Today I'm returning with a post regarding non-communicable diseases,
also known as lifestyle diseases. The reason why I'm bringing it up is
because it's widely discussed now and the fact is that 3 out of 5 people
who dies every year, is dying because of non-communicable diseases
(from now on shortened as NCD).
(from now on shortened as NCD).
NCDs are chronic diseases that occur due to urbanization.
Diseases that are included are the following:
- Cardiovascular diseases
- Diabetes
- Chronic Respiratory Disorder
- Cancer
Chronic, NCDs have emerged as leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide.
Several different behavioural changes make us more likely to develop NCDs.
Riskfactors that increase the risk of developing any of the diseases are:
- Use of tobacco or alcohol
- Unhealthy diet
- Low intake of vegetables, fruits
- High intake of salts, sugar and fat
- Physical inactivity
- Obesity
- Stress
But you can reduce the risk of developing NCDs by:
- Being active
- Reduce intake of fat
- Adopt healthy eating patterns
- Maintain ideal body weight
- Quit tobacco
- Avoid alcohol
- Decrease stress
The interesting here is that we can afford to pay, it would cost around
1 US dollar/person/year, to monitor, prevent and care. Even in the
poor countries they can turn the tide. This is a Global issue.
It requires a Global response as this is a Global issue.
A response from the government, the united nation and
the civil society as well as from the private sector.
When all countries are committed to take high-level political action,
to reduce exposure to risk factors as well as to improve access to
treatment and care. When they strenghten health systems and health
financing, that's how we can prevent NCDs.
Here is a short but informative video.
